SmartSens Releases New Ultra-Starlight 8MP CMOS Image Sensor with Large Optical Format for High-End Security Cameras

2023-3-16

Shanghai, China, March 16, 2023 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC880SL, an 8MP CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) of SmartSens Star Light (SL) Series. Employing SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SmartClarity®-2, SFCPixel®, NIR+, and ultra-low noise readout circuit, the BSI SC880SL image sensor delivers enhanced performance in low-light imaging, night vision, and imaging at high temperatures. As a high-performance CIS with large optical format, SC880SL brings ultra-starlight 4K vision output to high-end security cameras.

Low-light imaging

CIS suppliers have been pursuing technological advances in low-light imaging performance to meet the needs of security cameras in all-day operation. The BSI SC880SL image sensor comes in a 1/1.2-inch optical format, which allows for a larger light sensitive area of each pixel, thereby providing brighter and clearer image output in low-light environments. According to the data from testing, SC880SL has a minimum SNR1s of 0.18lux, achieving an equivalent imaging performance of similar stacked CIS.

SC880SL is equipped with SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SmartClarity®-2 and SFCPixel®, which enable its improved imaging performance. Compared with similar stacked CIS in the industry, SC880SL has a 33% rise in Full Well Capacity (FWC), and a 2dB increase in Maximum Signal-to-Noise Ratio (Max SNR), delivering excellent low-light imaging performance to high-end security cameras.

Night vision output

To support security cameras that require Near-Infrared (NIR) light under low-illumination conditions, SC880SL utilizes SmartSens’ NIR+ technology, achieving a maximum QE of 38% at 850nm and 24% at 940nm, thereby providing excellent night vision output even in ultra-low illumination environments.

Imaging at high temperatures

The upgraded CIS processes used on SC880SL enable SC880SL’s enhanced imaging performance at high temperatures. The conventional Silicon Nitride (SiN) film is replaced with high-stress SiN film, which significantly improves the sensor’s image quality in high-temperature environments. The ultra-low noise readout circuit used on SC880SL hinders darkcurrent and white pixels greatly. Compared with its predecessor, SC880SL has a 35% reduction in DarkCurrent (DC) and a 50% fall in Dark Signal Non-Uniformity (DSNU), leading to its brilliant vision output at high temperatures.

In addition, SC880SL supports Staggered HDR mode with a dynamic range of more than 100dB.

“The steady growth of the intelligent security industry leads to the boom of the security verticals, while a variety of demands for security applications arises. SmartSens is committed to the research and development of high-performance CIS solutions, which further meet or go beyond customers’ needs,” said Ms. Peiling Zhang, Chief Marketing Officer at SmartSens Technology, “As SmartSens’ first 8MP CIS in a 1/1.2" optical format, the SC880SL image sensor delivers 4K vision output at ultra-starlight level. Featuring SmartSens’ advanced full-color night vision with NIR+ technology, SC880SL comes in a large optical format that increases sensitivity. Powered by the upgraded CIS processes, the SC880SL image sensor offers excellent imaging performance at high temperatures, which makes it a competitive, high-performance imaging solution to empower intelligent security applications.”

SC880SL is sampling now and will be mass-produced in Q3 2023. For more information or to request a sample, please contact SmartSens Sales Representatives: cs@smartsenstech.com
