SmartSens Announces New 13MP High-Performance CMOS Image Sensor for Smartphone Cameras

2024-6-27

Shanghai, China, June 27, 2024 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC130HS, a 13-MegaPixel (MP), 1/3.06-inch CMOS Image Sensor (CIS). As SmartSens’ first cellphone CIS to be made on the SmartClarity®-XL platform, SC130HS incorporates a 55nm Stacked BSI process and SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SFCPixel® and PixGain HDR®, enabling its high dynamic range, high frame rate, low noise, and low power consumption, thus bringing excellent image output for high-end smartphone front-facing cameras and mainstream smartphone main cameras.

Main features

Clear imaging in day/night conditions

The stacked BSI SC130HS image sensor features high sensitivity, high dynamic range, and low noise, which makes it ideal for image capture in day or night conditions. SmartSens’ proprietary SFCPixel® technology provides improvements in the sensor’s light sensitivity. Compared with similar BSI image sensors, SC130HS achieves a 25% growth in sensitivity and a 12% rise in Quantum Efficiency (QE), enabling its clear image output even in low light conditions such as dark nights.

SC130HS supports both PixGain HDR® and Staggered HDR (SHDR) modes, which allows it to retain more image highlight and shadow details, delivering image outputs with layers and rich details.

To improve image quality, SC130HS supports two Correlated Multi-Sampling (CMS) modes, CMS2 and CMS4, which can reduce dynamic noise effectively. The Read Noise and PRNU are 22% and 38% less than other similar BSI image sensors respectively. At a temperature of 60℃, Dark Current (DC), white pixel, and DSNU are around 22%, 71%, and 57% lower than other similar BSI image sensors respectively. These result in the sensor’s precise and detailed image output, even when it's recording long videos.

Phase Detection AutoFocus (PDAF)

SC130HS supports image output in various formats, including 13MP 60fps, 13MP 30fps@HDR, and 1080P 120fps or 720P 240fps for slow-motion videos. Meanwhile, SC130HS supports Phase Detection AutoFocus (PDAF), achieving fast and accurate autofocus even in low-light or moving scenes, thereby providing crisp image capture for smartphone cameras at users’ fingertips.

Low power consumption

Thanks to SmartSens’ advanced SmartClarity®-XL process and ultra-low power design, the power consumption of the SC130HS image sensor is around 12% lower than other similar BSI image sensors, which further helps reduce the overall power consumption of the smartphone. Moreover, SC130HS comes in a 5350μm*4350μm chip size, allowing for size shrinking of smartphone camera modules, thus saving space for smartphone hardware integration.

“As SmartSens’ first cellphone CIS to be made on SmartClarity®-XL platform, SC130HS uses advanced technologies including hybrid-bond stacked BSI process, SFCPixel® and PixGain HDR®, enabling its high dynamic range, high frame rate, low noise, and low power consumption, thereby allowing for its high-quality image capture in various lighting conditions with multiple output format available,” said Dr. Yaowu Mo, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of SmartSens Technology. “In addition, SC130HS supports MIPI C-PHY and D-PHY interfaces with a maximum data transmission rate of 2.5Gbps/lane. Therefore, the new 13MP high-performance SC130HS image sensor is ideal for high-end smartphone camera systems, which further brings smartphone imaging capabilities to the next level.”

SC130HS is sampling now and will be mass-produced in Q3 2024. For more information or to request a sample, please contact SmartSens Sales Representatives: cs@smartsenstech.com
