Core Team

Dr. Richard Xu

Founder | President | CEO

Dr. Xu is founder and CEO of SmartSens. He has led the SmartSens team to combine the world’s most advanced imaging technologies with a culture of rapid iteration to quickly become a leader in the field of image sensors for security, automotive, and a range of industries. His vision has led the company to more than 20 US patents and 50 Chinese patents.

Dr. Xu is one of the leading minds in CMOS image sensor design, with more than 20 years of leading R&D and product design experience. His focus on digital and analog hybrid integrated circuit design and processing, device physics, and the semiconductor chip production process continues to drive SmartSens’ innovation.

Mr. Xu has worked in several world's leading Silicon Valley CMOS image sensor companies in the United States. Among his contributions to the imaging industry is a high-speed system architecture that helps resolve some of the critical noise problems inherent to these systems. This along with breakthrough contributions in the development of small-pixel global shutter pixels has contributed to both the rise of SmartSens and the advancement of the sensor industry at large.

Dr. Xu holds a PhD and master’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University.

Dr. Yaowu Mo

Co-Founder | CTO

Dr. Yaomu Mo is the co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of SmartSens. In this role, he is responsible for leading the company's advanced technology, solution design and development, and entire product life cycle.

Dr. Mo is personally responsible for the design of nearly a hundred CMOS image sensors that are widely used in many market segments—such as mobile phones, security, computers, vehicles, Internet of Things, medical, AR/VR, and machine vision applications.

Mr. Mo has worked as the head of R&D in several world's leading Silicon Valley CMOS image sensor companies in the United States for many years. He is proficient in the design of digital-analog hybrid integrated circuits and has led multinational R&D teams to develop innovative products in various fields, helped incumbent companies stay ahead in the field of CMOS image sensor technology, and obtained multiple technology patents in the United States and China.

Dr. Mo holds a Ph.D. in electronic science and technology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences University as well as a bachelor’s in semiconductor physics and devices from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He is a recipient of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award.

William Ma

Co-Founder | COO

Mr. Ma holds a master’s degree in electronic circuits and systems from Zhejiang University and has nearly two decades of Chip R&D and management experience.

Mr. Ma once worked as the R&D and Product Manager in Maxscend Technologies. He played a role in forming the Maxscend R&D team and managing more than ten chip development projects, such as H264/AVS image decoding chips, CMMB mobile TV chips, DTMB ground national standard chips and video SoC chips.

Mr. Ma subsequently joined SmartSens as the co-founder and VP of Technology, taking charge of product R&D and management. He is now the co-founder and COO of SmartSens. In this role, he is responsible for product planning, marketing and sales as well as supply-chain management.

Mike Hu

VP of Technology

Mr. Hu is the vice president of technology, responsible for management of the R&D team of SmartSens in Shanghai as well as the R&D center in Shenzhen.

Mr. Hu joined SmartSens at the beginning of 2020. Before that, he was the founder and CEO of Allchip, a startup company focused on CMOS image sensors, with products featuring as single-chip imaging system which integrates photo sensing, digital image processing, video encoding and transmission, all on a same chip. The products are ideal for high reliability small size video camera applications like automotive cameras, endoscopes and other security applications.

Mr. Hu was the co-founder of BYD Microelectronics, worked as the Chief Engineer, responsible for the product line of CMOS image sensor after he came back to China in 2004. He started working on CMOS image sensor design since 1999 in the USA.

Mr. Hu holds a master’s degree from University of Colorado and a bachelor’s degree from Peking University.

Tommy Wang

VP of Sensor Systems

Mr. Wang holds a master’s degree in optical engineering from Zhejiang University and has over 20 years of algorithm design experience in the field of image processing and computer vision.

Mr. Wang has worked in a world’s leading CIS company for more than ten years and has obtained a number of patents and technological breakthroughs. He successfully designed and completed dozens of ISP IPs which were widespread recognized and praised by the market and customers.

Mr. Wang joined SmartSens in 2017 and is currently the Vice President of Sensor Systems. In this position, he is responsible for the development of algorithms, the design of a new generation of AI CIS, the construction of lightweight neural network platforms and the R&D of system-level chips.

Rafa Jin

VP of Industry & Emerging Division

Mr. Jin holds a master degree in electronic circuits and systems from Zhejiang University and has over 15 years of chip development and marketing experience.

Mr. Jin once worked for S3 Graphics and Maxscend Technologies, responsible for product planning and marketing of many chips including GPU and image decoder.

Mr. Jin joined the company in 2016 and used to be Senior Sales Director. He is now the vice president of Industry & Emerging Division at SmartSens. In this role, he is responsible for promoting business development for image sensors in the fields of industry and emerging market, diversifying and planning product lines and marketing.

Ben Tan

VP of Security and IoT Division

Mr. Tan has over 16 years of marketing experience in security sensors.

Mr. Tan once worked for LACEWOOD, where he was responsible for the marketing of ADCs of video capture cards and video recorders and led to a market share of over 70% in this industry.

Mr. Tan joined the company in 2013 and held the position of Senior Sales Director. He is now Vice President of Security and IoT Division at SmartSens. In this role, he focuses on developing and promoting SmartSens’ business in security and IoT CMOS image sensors. He also takes charges of product line expansion and marketing.

Kevin Shao

VP of Automotive Division

Mr. Shao holds a master degree in Control Science and Engineering and has over 10 years of IC industry experience in imaging and video.

Mr. Shao has held several positions in the company since he joined in 2016, including Director of Algorithm and Director of Sensor Application. He is now the vice president of Automotive Division, responsible for product planning, market sale and method research and development.
