SmartSens Launches 14MP CMOS Image Sensor for Intelligent Transportation System

Shanghai, China, November 27, 2025, SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, announced the SC1435HGS, a 14-MegaPixel (MP) Global Shutter CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) for ITS (Intelligent Transportation System). Built on Smartsens’ advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus platform and equipped with Lightbox IR® technology, the SC1435HGS features multiple performance advantages such as high sensitivity, high dynamic range, high frame rate and low noise. With an optimized resolution of 4480H × 3072V, the sensor's horizontal field of view stably covers five urban traffic lanes, effectively minimizing blind spots caused by road dividers while enabling rapid, clear, and complete high-quality image capture.

Main Features
Greater Horizontal Resolution
Conventional ITS cameras are constrained by limited field of view. When monitoring wide urban roads—such as five-lane roads or thoroughfares with dividers—a single device can typically only cover a portion of the lanes. Full coverage of all lanes often requires the deployment of multiple units working in coordination, which in turn raises both equipment and installation costs. The SC1435HGS addresses this challenge with an optimized resolution of 4480Hx3072V, delivering an exceptionally wide field of view. This expanded horizontal coverage enables a single camera to reliably monitor five-lane urban roads and even wider thoroughfares, effectively eliminating blind spots caused by medians, dividers, or road-widening projects, while providing a more complete visual perspective for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

High Sensitivity
Designed with a BSI architecture and based on SmartSens' Lightbox IR® technology, the SC1435HGS achieves exceptional NIR sensitivity. Its peak quantum efficiency (QE) at 850nm and 940nm is approximately 31.6% and 16.2% higher, respectively, than that of similarly specified industry products. This ensures clear imaging in low-light conditions, making it well-suited for NIR‑enhanced intelligent transportation systems in overseas markets.
Following the SC935HGS, the SC1435HGS is the latest addition to SmartSens' growing portfolio of NIR‑enhanced image sensors for global ITS applications. It offers customers a new solution to enhance the regional adaptability of their end products.
High Dynamic Range
Based on Smartsens’ advanced PixGain technology, the SC1435HGS can capture finely detailed images under both low-light nighttime and bright daytime conditions, achieving high-definition and stable imaging under various lighting conditions. Furthermore, the SC1435HGS supports both Zone HDR and InSensor HDRTM technologies, effectively improving dynamic range and suppressing the impact of light variation on imaging performance. Even in high-contrast environments, it can prevent overexposure while clearly capturing fast-moving vehicles, achieving high-quality and stable imaging.
Low Noise
Leveraging SmartSens’ advanced Stack MIM capacitor technology and innovative Denoise algorithm, the SC1435HGS delivers outstanding noise suppression performance. Its read noise (RN) is reduced by approximately 23.4% compared to the previous generation, significantly enhancing the image quality of ITS cameras in low-light night conditions with improved fineness and clarity.

Imaging at High Temperatures
ITS outdoor cameras are often exposed to high-temperature environments for long periods, which can affect the imaging quality of CMOS image sensors. Based on SmartSens’ advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, the SC1435HGS significantly optimized high-temperature imaging capabilities. At 80℃, shading is reduced by approximately 48.1% compared to the previous generation, effectively reducing purple fringing at the edges of images captured under prolonged high-temperature conditions.
High Frame Rate
Tailored to the practical demand for rapid capture of high-speed moving objects, the SC1435HGS achieves optimized frame rate, supporting a maximum of 62 fps. When recording high-speed traffic flow, the SC1435HGS not only ensures smooth, high-quality video, but also delivers sufficient frame rate redundancy, thus ensuring flexible frame rate allocation in various emergency scenarios.
High Speed
ITS often operate under challenging visual conditions, including complex light sources and fast-moving bright objects, such as white vehicles. The SC1435HGS features a high shutter speed (PLS > 98,000), which mitigates motion blur when capturing high-brightness, high-speed moving objects under backlit conditions. This ensures that ITS visual systems receive clear, accurate and real-time video footage.

SmartGS™ Technology
In practical applications of ITS, surveillance cameras are often required to rapidly capture fast-moving vehicles. The rolling shutter image sensors, due to their line-by-line exposure mechanism, are prone to image distortion and smearing when photographing high-speed objects.
To address these issues, SmartSens pioneered its SmartGS™ technology in 2017, launching the world’s first global shutter CMOS image sensor based on a BSI process + voltage-domain pixel design architecture. Leveraging deep technical expertise in this field, SmartSens has secured 48 authorized core patents. These patents cover core voltage-domain global shutter pixel structures, solidifying its position as a leader in the international technology landscape. In 2019, the research findings on SmartGS™ technology were selected for presentation at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC 2019). The work was featured as the opening report at the conference.
Over the years, SmartSens has continued to invest in the development of the SmartGS™ product series, driving continuous technological iteration. The technology has now evolved to the second generation—SmartGS™-2 Plus, delivering significant improvements in night vision, sensitivity, high-temperature performance, and noise suppression.
As a global shutter image sensor built on the advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, the SC1435HGS effectively eliminates motion distortion and smearing in captured images of fast-moving objects, and meets the demands of ITS visual systems for accurately capturing high-speed traffic flow.
In addition to SC1435HGS (14MP), SmartSens has also introduced SC1235HGS, a 12-megapixel CMOS image sensor with equivalent performance, which is suitable for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and industrial inspection applications. The SmartGS™-2 Plus series now offers a range of high-performance global shutter image sensors covering resolutions from 6MP to 14MP, offering flexible solutions for ITS surveillance cameras, industrial inspection cameras, and other terminal devices—providing customers with a broader selection of product options.
