SmartSens Announces New 9MP and 6MP High-Performance CMOS Image Sensors for Intelligent Transportation

Shanghai, China, December 26, 2024, SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced two new high-performance global shutter CMOS image sensors (CISs) for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), the 9-MegaPixel (MP) SC935HGS and the 6-MegaPixel (MP) SC635HGS. Employing SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SmartGSTM-2 Plus and Lightbox IR®, the two new BSI image sensors support multiple HDR modes while delivering high dynamic range, high frame rate, low-noise performance, and distortion-free imaging. Tailored to the practical demands of ITS applications, SC935HGS and SC635HGS achieve optimizations in high-temperature imaging, frame rates, and Parasitic Light Sensitivity (PLS), fully meeting the requirements for fast, clear, accurate, and stable image capture in intelligent transportation systems under various complex conditions.

Main features
- SmartGS™-2 Plus technology
When capturing fast-moving objects, rolling shutter sensors are prone to motion blur and distortion due to their row-by-row exposure mechanism, which compromise the accuracy of the data collected by the camera. The BSI global shutter sensors SC935HGS and SC935HGS, powered by SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, eliminate motion artifacts through pixel-level simultaneous exposure. This makes SC935HGS and SC635HGS particularly suited for ITS high-speed traffic monitoring, delivering rapid, clear, accurate, and distortion-free captures that enhance the accuracy of data collected by cameras.
- High Sensitivity
Leveraging SmartSens’ advanced technology SmartGS™-2 Plus, both SC935HGS and SC635HGS achieve a peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) of up to 78% at the 520nm wavelength, representing a significant improvement over previous-generation products. This advancement ensures enhanced imaging clarity under low-light conditions. Furthermore, SC935HGS and SC635HGS incorporate SmartSens’ Lightbox IR® near-infrared enhancement technology, exhibiting superior sensitivity in the near-infrared wavelength compared to peer products with similar specifications. This technical advantage makes the sensors ideal for overseas intelligent transportation systems that use near-infrared (NIR) fill-in lighting, enabling end products to meet operational requirements across multiple regions.
- High Dynamic Range
Powered by PixGain technology, SC935HGS and SC635HGS achieve all-day high-definition imaging performance, unaffected by light conditions day and night. In low-light environments, SC935HGS and SC635HGS employ a High Gain mode to reduce read noise, thereby enhancing image detail clarity. Conversely, under bright daytime conditions, Low Gain mode prevents overexposure while making the imaging detailed and fine. Additionally, SC935HGS and SC635HGS support Zone HDR and ColGain HDR® to significantly expand dynamic range, thereby reducing the impact of light variations on ITS cameras, and minimizing the occurrence of localized overexposure, loss of shadow details, and other such issues.
- Low Noise

SC935HGS and SC635HGS utilize advanced Stack MIM Capacitor Technology and innovative Denoise Algorithm, significantly reducing image noise at both the circuit process and algorithmic levels. Compared to previous-generation products, SC935HGS and SC635HGS demonstrate a 57% reduction in Read Noise (RN) and a 42% decrease in Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN). Superior noise reduction ensures better detail accuracy and clarity in nighttime ITS imaging, while improving the accuracy of nighttime information capture.

- Imaging at High Temperatures
In high-temperature environments, ITS outdoor cameras deployed for road monitoring and other scenarios must stand up to all-day sunlight exposure. Leveraging the advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus technology and optimized manufacturing processes,SC935HGS and SC635HGS deliver significantly improvement in imaging at high temperatures. For instance, SC935HGS has an 83% reduction in dark shading at 80°C compared to its predecessors, effectively mitigating the issue of purple edges in the camera images caused by high-temperature conditions.
- High Frame Rate
Tailored to the characteristics of ITS scenarios that require capturing high-speed vehicles, SC935HGS and SC635HGS support an ultra-high frame rate of up to 65fps. This enhancement ensures smooth video recording of high-speed traffic flows while providing customers with additional frame rate headroom, thereby improving flexibility in real-world use.
- PLS Optimization

To avoid motion blur challenges posed by high-brightness, high-speed moving objects such as white vehicles and license plates, SC935HGS and SC635HGS achieve Parasitic Light Sensitivity (PLS) optimization with a more than ninefold improvement compared with predecessors. Featuring exceptional high shutter speed (PLS>98,000), SC935HGS and SC635HGS can provide ITS cameras with accurate, clear, high-quality images.
- Greater Vertical Resolution

SC935HGS employs a 3840H×2336V resolution, delivering better vertical resolution than competitors’. This enhanced vertical imaging capability optimizes the ITS camera's vertical field of view, minimizing vertical blind zones when capturing tall vehicles (e.g. trucks/buses) while ensuring clarity and comprehensive coverage for ITS lane monitoring systems. SC635HGS features a 2880H×2160V resolution, specifically engineered for adaptable deployment in compact road configurations like dual-lane ITS monitoring, meeting various application needs.
