SmartSens Announces Global Shutter CMOS Image Sensors for PC Perception Cameras

(SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced ultra-small size global shutter image sensors SC038MPC (0.3MP) and SC020MPC (0.16MP) for laptops and tablets. Employing SmartSens’ advanced SmartGS^TM-2 Plus technologies, the two new image sensors feature high sensitivity, distortion-free performance and ultra-low power consumption. Amid the full intelligence of AI PCs, mainstream computers are being equipped with perception cameras alongside their regular main cameras. With perception cameras, we can now easily achieve common biological vision detection and interaction features, including smartphone-like ones (smart face recognition unlocking, auto-filling passwords) and specialized ones (human presence detection, always-on), making PC devices smarter and more convenient.

Main Features

High sensitivity

PC devices are now used flexibly both indoors and outdoors, which means perception cameras must handle all kinds of tricky lighting. SC038MPC and SC020MPC are equipped with SmartSens’ patented Lightbox IR^® near-infrared enhancement technology, which provides them with high sensitivity. For example, SC020MPC hits a peak Quantum Efficiency (peak QE) of 95%, equaling the performance of similar stacked BSI products on the market. What’s more, its quantum efficiency in the 850nm and 940nm near-infrared wavelengths is about 10% and 5% higher than industry competitive products respectively.

Thanks to the excellent sensitivity performance, SC038MPC and SC020MPC can easily handle the complex lighting conditions that PC devices face in different environments. Both sensors can deliver clear, accurate images for perception cameras, helping PC devices develop efficient and reliable visual detection capabilities.

Distortion-free

As BSI global shutter image sensors equipped with SmartSens' SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, SC038MPCand SC020MPC deliver exceptional motion artifact suppression capability, delivering clear, accurate and distortion-free high-quality imaging for PC perception cameras and significantly enhancing recognition accuracy for moving humans.

High signal-to-noise ratio

Owing to SmartSens’ excellent pixel structure design, SC038MPC and SC020MPC deliver high Full Well Capacity (FWC) and Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR). For example, SC038MPC’s maximum SNR reaches up to 40.9dB. A high SNR ensures that perception cameras produce clean images with clear details, while speeding up PC devices’ visual detection and recognition.

Low power consumption

The implementation of human presence detection and always-on requires perception cameras to stay running in the background, and their power consumption significantly impacts PC devices’ overall battery life. SC038MPC and SC020MPC feature an ultra-low power consumption design. For example, SC020MPC’s power consumption is as low as 48.4mW (240fps), which effectively extends the overall battery life of PC devices.

Additionally, the high sensitivity of SC038MPC and SC020MPC greatly reduces the power needed for supplementary lighting when perception cameras capture images, which further supports longer battery life for PC devices.

Complete AI PC Vision Solution

SC038MPC has a package size of 2.73mmx2.28mm, while SC020MPC is only about 1.78mmx1.78mm. The ultra-small chip size enables the image sensors to perfectly fit the cameras in the ultra-slim screen bezels of AI PC devices and allows them to work with most mainstream AI PC devices.

Additionally, when used as image sensors for perception cameras, SC038MPC and SC020MPC can work alongside SmartSens’ previously released PC main camera image sensors SC521PC (5MP) and SC200PC (2MP) to jointly form a complete image sensors solution for AI PC vision systems. This solution can ensure excellent imaging performance while balancing the benefits of cost upgrading, helping AI PC’s smart vision enter a new era.
