SmartSens Releases New 5MP Automotive-Grade RGB-IR Global Shutter CMOS Image Sensor for In-Cabin Monitoring Applications

Shanghai, China, August 24, 2023 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC533AT, a 5-MegaPixel (MP) automotive-grade RGB-IR CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) of SmartSens Automotive Sensor (AT) Series. The SC533AT image sensor is AEC-Q100 Grade 2 and ISO 26262 ASIL B compliant. Utilizing SmartSens’ proprietary technologies including SmartGS^®-2 Plus, this BSI global shutter image sensor incorporates enhanced imaging performance with improved IR light sensitivity, bringing fast, precise image output to automotive in-cabin monitoring applications such as Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring System (OMS).

SmartSens AT Series now features eleven automotive-grade CISs with resolution from 1MP to 8MP, providing high-quality imaging solutions for automotive viewing applications, automotive sensing applications, and automotive in-cabin monitoring applications.

Main Features

Enhanced imaging performance

Employing SmartSens’ proprietary technologies including SmartGS^®-2 Plus, and SFCPixel^®, the SC533AT image sensor with a pixel size of 2.2µm features high resolution, high shutter speed, excellent chroma, and low noise, producing fast, precise image capture during the drive. SC533AT has a 5MP resolution and wide angle of view to capture clear, accurate images with rich details. In terms of shutter speed, SC533AT achieves PLS of up to 20000, significantly higher than that of 3.0µm FSI global shutter image sensors in the industry, yielding its high-speed, high-quality image capture during the drive. SmartSens’ upgraded color process enables advancements in chroma for normal A and chroma for D65, bringing vivid colors to the sensor’s image output. SmartSens’ ultra-low noise readout circuit and the High Density MIM (HD MIM) on SC533AT allow for better noise reduction, and imaging at high temperatures. SC533AT has PRNU of down to 0.69%, resulting in clear, low-noise image output with rich details. At a temperature of 80℃, SC533AT maintains low DarkCurrent (DC), ensuring high-quality, stable image output during long-hour operation even in high-temperature environments. Therefore, SC533AT’s fast, precise image output supports DMS or OMS in detecting drivers/occupants’ actions and distractions, thereby promoting driving safety.

Improved IR light sensitivity

CMOS image sensors with RGB-IR are ideal for high-end DMS or OMS, especially in low-light conditions such as night drive. SC533AT equips LightBox IR^®, which enables improved IR light sensitivity via the upgraded Deep Trench Isolation (DTI). In addition, the SC533AT image sensor achieves high QE at both 850nm and 940nm. These result in the sensor’s excellent imaging performance in low-light environments.
