SmartSens Unveils Its First 2MP CMOS Image Sensor for Medical Imaging

Shanghai, China, June 5, 2025 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC1400ME, a 2-MegaPixel (MP) CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) for Medical Imaging. Employing SmartSens’advanced technologies including SmartClarity^®-3 and SFCPixel^®, SC1400ME features multiple performance advantages such as high color fidelity, high sensitivity, low noise and low power consumption, which can provide clear and stable color images for medical endoscope cameras. SC1400ME features a compact package size of just 1.9mm × 2.5mm, making it suitable for various medical endoscopic devices such as gastroscopes and laparoscopes, and helping to upgrade medical imaging capabilities.

Main features

Ultra-small package size, wide field of view

Medical endoscope is a kind of medical detection instrument with slender tube. It can enter the human body through natural body cavities or small surgical incisions, assisting doctors in medical tasks. The application scenarios of endoscopic require the miniaturization of imaging components. The SC1400ME adopts a compact CSP-OP package, with a package size of only approximately 1.9mm × 2.5mm, making it highly suitable for various types of medical endoscopes such as gastroscopes, laparoscopes, cystoscopes, laryngoscopes, and hysteroscopes.

In addition, SC1400ME adopts a square 1:1 resolution (1400H*1400V) specially developed for medical images, which can obtain a larger field of view for the endoscope cameras.

High color fidelity

To accurately identify the abnormalities and lesions of human tissues, medical endoscopes have high requirements for color rendering. The SC1400ME features high color fidelity, which can effectively avoid issues such as color distortion, uneven rendering, and color cast. It delivers true, accurate, and high-quality color images for medical endoscopes to help doctors assess the disease more accurately and efficiently.

High sensitivity

The SC1400ME adopts SmartSens’advanced technologies including SmartClarity^®-3 and SFCPixel^®, with a pixel size of 1.12µm, has excellent sensitivity performance. Its peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) is as high as 70%, which is superior to industry peers with similar specifications. The high-sensitivity performance enables medical endoscopes to capture brighter and clearer images under low-light conditions inside the human body which is conducive to reducing picture interference and improving the efficiency and accuracy of doctors' diagnosis, enhancing the visibility of in-vivo examinations.

Low noise

Benefiting from SmartSens' SFCPixel^® technology, SC1400ME achieves higher sensitivity while significantly reducing noise, with a Read Noise (RN) of only approximately 1.68e⁻. Low-noise performance enables endoscopes to capture clearer and cleaner imaging details in low-light environments inside the human body, improving the efficiency and accuracy of doctors' diagnosis.

Low power consumption

The SC1400ME adopts an ultra-low power consumption design, with a power consumption as low as 84.8mW. It can effectively reduce the heat generated at the tip of the medical endoscope during operation, thereby minimizing the impact of high temperatures on image quality, and ensuring stable imaging performance. Moreover, the reduction of heat generated during imaging can also reduce the impact of endoscope's operating temperature on the internal organs, making the inspection more reassuring.

Compatible with MIPI/LVDS interfaces

Medical endoscopes are diverse in types, with high customization demands, and their requirements for data transmission performance also vary. The SC1400ME supports two mainstream interfaces, MIPI and LVDS, enabling flexible compatibility with different System on Chip (SoC) and fully meeting the data transmission needs of various types of endoscopes.
