SmartSens Announces Ultra-Starlight 2MP CMOS Image Sensor for Intelligent Security Applications

Shanghai, China, October 29, 2025 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC285SL, a new 2-MegaPixel (MP) CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) of SmartSens Star Light (SL) Series for intelligent security applications. SC285SL is built on SmartSens' SmartClarity®-3 platform, and integrates SmartSens' advanced technologies including SmartAOV®2.1, SFCPixel® and Lightbox IR®. It has excellent performance in high sensitivity, low noise, and high dynamic range, which significantly enhance the image quality of AI dark-light full-color cameras in outdoor low-light scenes, allowing cameras to deliver clear full-color images without fill light. Besides, SC285SL features Always-On Video (AOV), low power consumption, etc., which provide reliable support for all-day stable operation of outdoor wireless cameras.

Main features

High sensitivity

AI dark-light full-color cameras usually need fill light to achieve color imaging in low-light environments. Equipped with SmartSens' patented SFCPixel® technology, SC285SL has exceptional sensitivity reaching up to 12236mV/lux*s and SNR1s as low as 0.1lux, which enables cameras to capture clear, bright, and full-color images even in low-light outdoor conditions without fill light.

Developed upon Lightbox IR® technology, SC285SL achieves enhanced Near-Infrared (NIR) sensitivity. The peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) at the 850nm wavelength of SC285SL is up to 40%, and the peak QE has a 25% increase at the 940nm wavelength compared with its predecessor, providing clearer and brighter images in low-light scenes.

Low noise

SC285SL employs SFCPixel® technology and supports CMS2, CMS4, and 12-bit quantization modes, which effectively reduce read noise. SC285SL achieves a read noise as low as 0.82e- under high-gain long exposure mode, this figure is significantly reduced by around 39% compared with its predecessor, enabling clean and detailed images.

SmartAOV®2.1 technology

Equipped with SmartSens’ upgraded SmartAOV®2.1 technology, SC285SL supports Always-On Video (AOV). When a moving target is not detected, SC285SL captures videos at a low frame rate of 1fps in a low power consumption mode. When a moving target is detected, it is awakened quickly and captures videos at a frame rate of 30fps. Therefore, AOV enables cameras to capture all-day videos 24/7.

Compared with its predecessor, SmartAOV®2.1 technology has the following advantages:

· Optimized booting time: By decreasing the number of register configurations, the booting and transmission efficiency of CIS have been further improved.

· Dynamic power consumption indication function: By controlling the trigger timing of the rising and falling edges of the fill light, it achieves precise synchronization of the fill light time and CIS exposure time, eliminating ineffective power consumption during non-exposure time.

· Multiple sensors booting synchronization: In master-slave mode, it enables the synchronization of booting and exposure time for multiple sensors in multi-camera solution, thereby improving shooting speed.

· Enhanced image processing effect: the built-in AWB function of the CIS has been raised to 16x gain, which covers a wider range of the color temperature, thus achieving better image color reproduction.

· Interrupt mode: When the booting is completed, CIS sends a logic level to the System on Chip (SoC). The SoC doesn’t need to obtain the CIS’s booting status by reading the register, which reduces resource usage and improves operational efficiency.

Low power consumption

Based on the precise control of internal modules, SC285SL has power consumption as low as 91mW, 148mW, and 205mW at the frame rates of 30fps, 60fps, and 90fps, respectively, which effectively reduce the heat during camera operation and meets the long-term video recording needs of security applications.

Imaging at high temperatures

SC285SL adopts SmartSens' advanced SmartClarity®-3 technology, achieving superior high-temperature imaging performance. Compared with the predecessor, SC285SL’s Dark Current (DC) and White Pixel (WP) are significantly reduced by about 91% and 43% at a temperature of 80°C, thus enabling cameras to output stable and clear images in high-temperature environments.

High dynamic range

The highest dynamic range of SC285SL is up to 92dB in InSensor HDR™ mode, which meets the video recording requirements of security surveillance in different outdoor light conditions. InSensor HDR™ supports DR100, DR200, and DR400, which make images accurate and clear from narmal light to strong contrast light scenes. Furthermore, based on the single-frame multiple-gain image fusion technology of InSensor HDR™, SC285SL achieves high dynamic range while effectively suppressing motion blur, which achieves accurate and clear images. In addition, SC285SL also supports Staggered HDR, which help cameras to capture more image details, thereby adapting to diverse intelligent security applications.
