SmartSens Launches New 4K 1/3-Inch CMOS Image Sensor for Intelligent Security Applications

Developed on SmartSens’ proprietary SmartClarity^®-3 process platform, the new sensor integrates advanced technologies including Lightbox IR^®, SmartAOV^®2.1 and InSensor HDR™. The SC832HAI delivers superior performance in high sensitivity, low power consumption and high dynamic range, while also supporting Always-On Video (AOV) functionality. Designed with a 30-pin compact package, the SC832HAI offers both superior imaging performance and cost efficiency, thereby satisfying the iterative market demands for higher picture quality and reduced camera body weight in smart home security applications.

Main Features

High Sensitivity

The SC832HAI is designed with a BSI pixel architecture and incorporates SmartSens' patented SFCPixel^® technology, achieving a quantum efficiency (QE) of 82% at the visible light wavelength of 520nm. Even in low-light conditions such as overcast days or twilight, the camera can still output bright, clear images with fine detail retention. Leveraging the Lightbox IR^® near-infrared enhancement technology, the SC832HAI utilizes optical modulation and deep trench isolation(BDTI) processes to enhance the infrared light absorption of the pixel photosensitive area, further improving QE and reducing pixel crosstalk. At NIR wavelengths of 850nm and 940nm, the SC832HAI achieves a QE of 44% and 25%, respectively, representing improvements of 125% and 108% compared to industry competitors of the same specification. This enables the camera to capture clear NIR images in low-illumination nighttime scenes, thereby ensuring stable 24/7 imaging performance for security cameras.

Low Power Consumption

Thanks to the precise control design of the internal circuit, the SC832HAI exhibits excellent low-power performance. At an operating frame rate of 20fps, power consumption of the SC832HAI is as low as 175mW, approximately 19% lower than its predecessor. This outstanding power efficiency further reduces the overall system power of security camera modules.

High Dynamic Range

Leveraging SmartSens’ advanced SmartClarity^®-3 platform and incorporating the innovative InSensor HDR™ technology, the SC832HAI enables single-exposure multi-gain fusion within the same frame, achieving a dynamic range of 76.9dB while effectively suppressing motion artifacts for clear images. The sensor also supports Staggered HDR mode, extending the dynamic range to over 100dB. This combination allows cameras to reliably handle challenging lighting conditions, including backlight, intense light, and high‑contrast scenes, preserving details in both highlights and shadows to deliver vivid and fine imagery.

Support for Always-On Video (AOV)

The SC832HAI is equipped with SmartSens' patented SmartAOV®2.1 technology, supporting Always-On Video (AOV) functionality that effectively balances smooth video recording with low power consumption. When an event is detected, the SC832HAI can be quickly awakened to capture real-time footage at a standard frame rate of 20fps. In the absence of event triggers, the sensor switches to an ultra-low frame rate of 1fps, significantly reducing operational power consumption and extending the device's battery life. This enables smart home security cameras to deliver 24/7 long‑term security monitoring.

Compact Package Design

As a 4K CMOS image sensor with a 1/3‑inch optical format, the SC832HAI features a new 30‑pin compact package, aligning with the home security imaging market’s evolving trend toward lightweight and cost‑effective solutions.

The SC832HAI delivers a 4K ultra‑high‑definition resolution. When paired with an F1.6 aperture lens, it significantly enhances low‑light imaging performance, enabling home security cameras to output clear, bright, and clean images in indoor dim‑light environments, while striking an excellent balance between performance and cost efficiency.

Furthermore, the SC832HAI features a newly adopted 30‑pin compact pinout design that effectively shrinks the camera module’s physical footprint. This aligns with the industry trend toward lighter, more compact smart home devices and helps reduce overall system BOM costs.
