SmartSens Announces New 50MP 1-inch Ultra High Dynamic Range CMOS Image Sensor for High-end Smartphone Cameras

(SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced SC5A5XS, a new 50-MegaPixel (MP) 1-inch CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) for Smartphone Cameras. SC5A5XS is built on SmartSens’SmartClarity^®-XL Pro platform, incorporates a 28+nm Stacked BSI process, and integrates SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SuperPixGain HDR™ , SFCPixel^®-2, and AllPix ADAF^®. As SmartSens' first 1-inch domestic CMOS image sensor equipped with SuperPixGain HDR™ technology, SC5A5XS features an ultra-high dynamic range of 110dB and offers multiple performance advantages including ultra-high sensitivity, all-pixel all-directional autofocus, and ultra-low power consumption. It can bring a significant improvement in imaging to the main camera of flagship smartphones.

High Sensitivity

SC5A5XS features a 1-inch ultra-large optical size, which is currently the largest available optical size among CMOS image sensors for smartphone cameras. It has an ultra-large pixel size of 1.6μm and delivers exceptional sensitivity reaching up to 2569mV/lux*s, representing an approximately 72% increase over its predecessor.

Ultra-High Dynamic Range

SC5A5XS incorporates SuperPixGain HDR™ technology, with a dynamic range of up to 110dB, a significant improvement over previous-generation sensors on the same process. Based on SuperPixGain HDR™ technology, SC5A5XS enables smartphone cameras to preserve highlights without overexposure, revealing subtle shadow details, and delivering vivid images even in backlit scenes during video recording under complex lighting environments.

SmartSens SuperPixGain HDR™ technology is achieved through the combination of three frames under the same exposure. While ensuring an ultra-high dynamic range, it can effectively suppress the motion artifacts. Therefore, when shooting moving objects, SC5A5XS can bring vivid, clear and motion artifact-free video to smartphone cameras. Moreover, in SuperPixGain HDR mode, the SC5A5XS supports 4K 60fps ultra-high dynamic range video recording, meeting the needs of professional video shooting.

Comprehensive Performance Improvement

As a 50MP CMOS image sensor for the main camera of flagship smartphones, SC5A5XS achieves multiple improvements in key imaging performance such as low noise, fast autofocus, and low power consumption. Thanks to SmartSens' SFCPixel®-2 technology, the read noise of SC5A5XS is < 1e-, which enables smartphone cameras to capture clearer night scene images. Meanwhile, with the AllPix ADAF^® technology, SC5A5XS supports all-pixel all-directional autofocus, achieving fast and accurate autofocus even in low-light environments.

In addition, SC5A5XS features excellent ultra-low power consumption performance. Compared with its predecessor on the same platform, the power consumption of SC5A5XS is reduced by approximately 10%, which helps extend the duration of continuous video recording for smartphones.
