SmartSens Announces New 16MP CMOS Image Sensor for Smartphone Cameras

Shanghai, China, March 14, 2024 SmartSens Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR MARKET: 688213), a technologically-advanced CMOS image sensor supplier, recently announced a new CMOS image sensor of SmartSens Cellphone Sensor (CS) Series, the 16-MegaPixel (MP) SC1620CS. Leveraging SmartSens’ advanced technologies including SmartClarity^®-3 and SFCPixel-SL^®, the 1.0μm BSI image sensor features high sensitivity, high dynamic range, low noise, etc., which make it ideal for smartphone camera applications such as rear main cameras and rear wide-angle cameras.

Main features

Low noise

SC1620CS employs SmartSens’ advanced SFCPixel-SL^® technology and innovative conversion gains of both high gain and low gain desgin, it features low noise. Compared with similar products in the industry, SC1620CS has a reduction of 38% in Read Noise (RN) and 55% in Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN), making images clearer in low-light environments.

High dynamic range

Compared with similar products in the industry, the Full Well Capacity (FWC) of SC1620CS increases by about 17%, and the dynamic range of SC1620CS increases by about 5dB. When shooting high-light environments, SC1620CS can effectively output highlight and shadow details, which accordingly brings layered and textured images to smartphone cameras.

In addition, SC1620CS supports 2×2 Summing mode, with an equivalent 2.0μm pixel size, which can output 4MP 60fps high frame rate images.

Upgraded BSI pixel process

Depending on SmartSens' upgraded BSI pixel lens and color process, SC1620CS’ sensitivity and Quantum Efficiency (QE) are about 15% higher than its predecessor, and it has an increase of 15% in Chroma A and 7% in Chroma D65 ,relatively, which can facilitate to output clear images in low-light scenes.

SC1620CS adopts innovative BSI pixel isolation and chip surface treatment technologies, which can effectively reduce Dark Current (DC) and White Pixel (WP), and greatly improve the image quality under high temperature conditions. Compared with similar products in the industry, its Dark Current (DC) has a reduction by lower than 10% at temperature of 60°C, which provides stable and clean images even at high temperatures or in long-term use of smartphones.
